Ares confronts Gabrielle on her choice to follow 'The Way of Love'

War and Peace

"So this peace thing."

Gabrielle looked up from what she was doing to find Ares standing against a tree staring down at her. She sighed,

"What do you want Ares?"

He shrugged, and glanced off in the direction Xena had gone for dinner, "Just wondering about the peace thing."

"What about it?"

His eyes found hers again, and she couldn't help but feel drawn in. He had that effect. That presence. "I don't get it."

Gabrielle had to stop herself from laughing, "You wouldn't. You *are* the God of War after all. It's a little against your nature."

Ares pushed off from the tree he was leaning against and strode towards her. The bard stood up, not prepared to be at a disadvantage of position despite their height difference. However, as he grew closer, her nerves began to flutter in her stomach regardless, and she found her back against a tree.

The God stared down at her, his body closer than she had ever felt it. It was overwhelming and a little scary. She knew who he was, what he had done, and what he stood for. She knew that people died in his name, that he was and always would be a danger to Xena and a threat to her struggle to stay good and repent for all she had done. She also knew the path she was following now was the complete opposite of what he stood for. Yet something still called to her.

"Isn't it against yours too?"

She gasped and he laughed as he disappeared, leaving her flustered and a little put out. The air that had been between them started to cool, making her even more aware of how hot her skin had been. Her reaction to his presence puzzled her.

But his words even more so.
